Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Joins as Support Race for F1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix 2020

Feb 12, 2020 | Press Release

HA NOI, Vietnam (Feb. 12, 2020) -- The Vietnam Grand Prix Corporation (VGPC), Promoter of the Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix 2020, is delighted to confirm that the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia (PCCA) has been added as a support race for the first ever Formula 1 event to take place on the streets of Hanoi this April, taking its place alongside the Thailand Super Series on the weekend’s racing schedule.

Bringing its signature brand of exhilarating motorsports competition to millions across the region and beyond, the PCCA has earned an impressive fan and media following since its launch in 2003.  Firmly established as Asia’s premier one-make racing series, the 2020 season sees a formidable international field of brilliant drivers competing wheel-to-wheel with dedicated privateers. A proven testing ground for fledgling talent and a showcase for the world’s leading GT competitors, the PCCA is today considered the number one choice for the region’s finest drivers.

With over 60 years of racing history and more than 30,000 victories to date, Porsche is the biggest manufacturer in the world to specialise in high performance cars and is the most successful marque in motorsport.

The 2020 PCCA season, which marks its 18th campaign, will see the series supporting three Formula 1 rounds and visiting six world-class venues over seven race weekends. This includes racing at the all-new Hanoi Circuit supporting the highly anticipated Formula 1 VinFast Vietnamese Grand Prix 2020, as well as at the Chinese and Singapore Grands Prix alongside races in Buriram and Bangsaen.

In addition to enjoying the Formula 1 and PCCA racing action, fans will be treated to the Thailand Super Series which will also be competing on the undercard across the 3-day race weekend. Spectators can therefore look forward to a comprehensive weekend of track activities from Friday 3rd until Sunday 5th April on the brand-new Hanoi Circuit.

Commenting on the announcement earlier today, the CEO of the Vietnam Grand Prix Corporation, Ms. Le Ngoc Chi said: “We are thrilled to confirm the addition of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia to the Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix program. As the premier one-make racing series in the region, its inclusion on our schedule alongside TSS  ensures that the inaugural F1 race weekend in Vietnam will deliver on its promise to showcase the greatest racing action on the planet across the whole weekend. If you like fast cars, high-level competition and spectacular drama, then this really is an unmissable event.”

“It is truly an honour to have our tyres be the first to tread the tarmac on this brand-new circuit” Said Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia-Pacific Alexandre Gibot. “Alongside running Asia’s premier one-make racing series and competing across the continent in a host of other prestigious motorsport events, we at Porsche consider it a duty to encourage the growth of motorsport culture in Asia. We do this not only for financial reasons, but because we have a sincere passion for high-speed competition. Seeing grandstands full of cheering fans is just as big a thrill to us as crossing the finish line first. The Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix 2020 is another feather in the cap of Asian motorsport, and we are thrilled to be part of this historic event.”

Taking place from 3rd to 5th April 2020, the inaugural Formula 1 race in Vietnam is set to be a truly sensational race weekend as it sees the pinnacle of motorsport make its debut in Vietnam for the third round of next year’s 22-race FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

The Hanoi Circuit itself is shaping up to be one of the most breathtaking circuits in F1. A feat of design, innovation & construction, the track will pose a stern examination of the drivers' strength and skills, whilst providing fans with a weekend of non-stop, adrenaline-fuelled racing action.

The promoter has recently announced the completion of the Pit Building, marking an important milestone in the development of the Hanoi Circuit. With the track itself nearing completion and grandstands starting to go up as the event draws ever closer, the excitement levels for the Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix 2020 are rapidly growing.
